THE DEVELOPER of Cherry Hills subdivision in Antipolo City is facing strong opposition from residents of Barangay Mariana in New Manila, Quezon City for cutting down century-old acacia trees at 11th Street corner Dona Hemady Street.
Former senatorial candidate Jamby Madrigal led residents in filing a petition with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to stop Dolmar Property Ventures from cutting down the trees to give way to a 20-unit townhouse project to be constructed on a 2,641-square meter lot.
Madrigal said Barangay Mariana residents were not advised about the tree-cutting on the morning of June 13, which was an official holiday marking Philippine independence.
She said Dolmar personnel used unlicensed chainsaws to cut the trees with no DENR officials monitoring the activity.
"They took advantage of the holiday, when residents were just resting," Madrigal told the Inquirer. "The absence of a DENR monitoring team on a holiday makes their activity malicious."
