IT is well that Sen. Noli de Castro has not allowed recent surveys showing him leading the field of presidential aspirants to go to his head. He was recently quoted as saying that he believed now is not the time for him to run for president.
De Castro, who gained popularity as a broadcaster of the ABS-CBN radio and television network, at least has the humility to admit that he still has a lot to learn about the task of leading the country. "It is not a joke if you run for the No. 1 or No. 2 position, " he said. He added that he needed to learn a lot of things and would rather complete his first term as senator.
He is unlike some other presidential aspirants who think that a few years in the Senate is enough to arm one with the experience and knowledge to run a country well. Those who would be president should know that a term in the Senate does not automatically transform one into good presidential material. Look at the country's experience with former Sen. Joseph Estrada.
The survey results showing De Castro leading the presidential race apparently demonstrates that the Filipino voters have not learned from the experience with Estrada. They will vote for a president on the basis of popularity and media exposure and not on the basis of character, ethics, vision, competence, ...
