BASCO, Batanes-The Ivatans, known for their resiliency amid the harsh environment of Batanes Islands, took time out to celebrate their unique culture in a weeklong festivity that featured their version of bayanihan (cooperation).
Representatives from six towns of Batanes each featured payuhwan (Ivatan culture of cooperativism) in various aspects of community life, such as house building, farming, fishing and wedding rites.
The cultural show was the highlight of Batanes' 220th founding anniversary celebration held last week.
Uyugan town won the top honors for its "realistic and artistic" feature of the Ivatan's cooperation, as shown in house building.
Organizers said they chose to highlight the payuhwan in the celebration, because this was a big factor in the Ivatans' survival through the years, despite natural calamities.
