Absalom Bixler of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, gave his wife, Sarah, six redware flowerpots and two redware plates over the course of their marriage. The objects are all dated 1824, but evidence from church records, tax lists, and related materials indicate that they were made later. Rather than being gifts from a newly married husband to his bride, these objects were given m remembrance of the beginnings of a romantic relationship that had persevered for at least twenty-five years.
Unlike most American redware, which was created for utilitarian purposes and unmarked, these plates and flowerpots in addition to the date are all marked either "ABSALOM" or ABS. ...
