Louisa Courtauld (nee Ogler) was born in London into a Huguenot family of silk weavers in 1729. She married Samuel Courtauld I, who was a member of a London dynasty of goldsmiths. The couple had seven children and together ran a successful business until Samuel Courtauld's death in 1765. Thereafter his widow took on another business partner who was replaced by her son Samuel Courtauld H in 1777. In 1780 the business was sold, Louisa retired, and Samuel Courtauld II moved to the United States.
The Courtauld Institute Gallery in London has mounted a permanent display of works by members of the Courtauld family Entitled A Century of Silver: The Courtauld Silversmiths in the Eighteenth Century, it is sponsored by Akzo Nobel (the current owner of the ...
