Afghan leader Hamed Karzai has said there is nothing in Eastern or Afghan traditions that precludes democracy. Interviewed by the Iranian newspaper Iran, Karzai said the main problems are the gun culture and violence. He said the people of Afghanistan are now controlling their own affairs more every day. Karzai said he hoped to see more cooperation between Iran and USA. The following is the text of the interview, published on the newspaper's web site on 22 June:
Political Group: The middle-aged and elegant leader of Afghanistan attended the Sa'dabad Palace festivities for the second time. Even though Hamed Karzai is the ally and partner of Iran's rival, he is still looked at as a friend and neighbour.
