I just finished reading Karl Zinsmeister's "Dust and Stars" (June). Rarely have I read anything as compelling and uplifting. Zinsmeister's description of our men in battle filled me with pride and gratitude. How I envy today's fighting men and women, who have an immense sense of purpose and mission. Their current political leaders, likewise, have deep integrity as well as an appreciation of the dangers of battle. Nonetheless, these leaders understand that, at times, battles are unavoidable.
I once asked myself the question, "Where do we get the men who will scale the cliffs of the Pointe-du-Hoc, storm the beaches of Iwo Jima, or climb the stairs of a burning World Trade Center?" Zinsmeister's article reaffirmed what I already knew: We get these men from California, New York, Montana, and all the other states that make up this magnificent country. Thus it was, thus it is, and thus it shall ever be.

I am Head Representative for the Charlie Company 2-325, 82nd Airborne Division Family Readiness Group, and I really would like to thank you for publishing "Dust and Stars." Not hearing from our husbands and sons for over six weeks has truly been tough. Your article was so detailed that we all got chills from reading it.
