Autism is a complex brain disorder that afflicts victims with moderate to severe problems in communications and social interaction, without affecting underlying intellect in most cases. Simon Baron-Cohen, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Cambridge, is one of the world's leading authorities on autism. In his new book, he tries to explain autism on the basis of men and women having significantly different types of brains: Women's brains, he believes, are hardwired for empathy while men's brains find their strengths in understanding and building systems.
He defines these two types as Empathizing (E) and Systemizing (S) brains. Some people have a female brain, others a male brain, and others, a mix. His evidence comes from a variety of sources: Behavioral observation (especially of children), psychological examination, and neurological tests, including experiments involving hormones.
