Dmitry Yablonsky, Russian State Symphony Orchestra. Naxos 8.555873-74 (2 discs).
You would expect a Russian conductor and a Russian orchestra to be sympathetic to the music of Tchaikovsky. They were all brought up on Swan Lake. Yet there is something less than thrilling in this interpretation of the composer's first and most accomplished ballet. Certainly, all the big moments are intact and all the poetry is preserved, but I never felt the rush of adrenaline I sometimes get in the grand waltzes and finales. In fact, Yablonksy seems positively earthbound when compared to Andre Previn and his LSO account (EMI) from nearly a quarter of a century earlier.
This is a shame, really, considering the talent at Yablonsky's disposal. Still, he does inject a degree of character into the various miniature dances and such.
