"Well, I don't see no p'ints about that frog that's any better'n any other frog," says the stranger in Mark Twain's "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." With so many competing performances of the world's basic musical repertoire on CD, it takes something awfully good to make a fellow want to go out and buy another recording of something he probably already has. Paavo Jarvi's readings of Stranvinsky's Petrouchka (1947 version), Firebird Suite, and Scherzo a la Russe are perfectly acceptable renderings of these old chestnuts, but I don't see any points about them any better than many other releases.
It's a dilemma facing the entire classical music industry today. Only the most popular works by the most popular composers sell in any numbers worth talking about, and the market for these pieces is already saturated. What's a conductor to do? A budget-oriented company like Naxos can afford ...
