It is an acoustic guitar, designed and originally built in the 1920s in Southern California by Hermann Weissenborn. It was intended to capitalize on the interest in Hawaiian Music during that period. The design was fairly interesting, if not unique, in that the sound chamber extended all the way up the neck to the peg head. It was designed to be played lap-syle with a steel or slide. The instrument was generally made from Hawaiian Koa wood.
It is still an instrument of choice for many slide guitar players due to it's tonal qualities. It does not have the nasal or metallic qualities of a Dobro or National guitar and also sounds different from a standard guitar played lap-style.
