President Gloria Arroyo's government is close to resuming peace talks with the Philippines's largest Muslim separatist guerrilla group after their leader agreed to lead the negotiations, the two sides said.
"The government and the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) peace panels are now re-entering the peace talks mode," Arroyo spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in a written statement following informal talks between the two sides in Malaysia this week.
Salamat Hashim, the MILF chairman, would lead his group in negotiations, Bunye added Tuesday.
