After two years of waiting, South Africa's first AIDS vaccine trial has finally been approved. The Medicines Control Council (MCC) quietly gave the go-ahead for human studies of the vaccine on 6 June following a meeting in Pretoria with vaccine scientists the previous day.

This means human testing of the first ever AIDS vaccine based exclusively on the C-strain of HIV, which occurs predominantly in southern Africa, could start in South Africa within the next two months.
