The Labor Party will almost certainly defy public opinion today and endorse Simon Crean as its federal parliamentary leader.

In the face of a series of opinion polls which show strong community support for former leader Kim Beazley, the 92-member Labor Caucus is likely to back Mr Crean by a hefty margin. But Mr Crean ruled out yesterday a vendetta against the pro-Beazley front-bench plotters who targeted his leadership and brought on today's challenge.

Caucus will decide the leader of the party in a secret ballot at 10am. Estimates of the count put Mr Crean's support at 53 votes, Mr Beazley's at …
