On April 4th of this year, Phillip Estes was knocked unconscious when the pickup truck he was driving veered off a road and plunged into the runoff-swollen Yakima River near Richland, Washington. The swift current began carrying the vehicle downstream.

David Brons was driving by at the time. Witnessing the accident, he stopped, dived into the river, and upon reaching the truck sought unsuccessfully to break out the cab's rear window. He surfaced and yelled at bystanders on the bank to toss him a rock, which he then used to break the window.
