While supermarkets and discount retailers are stealing sales from Boots in some sectors, chairman John McGrath points to the fact that it's still number one on what it regards as home turf.

He said: "We are the UK's leading health and beauty retailer." Boots first came on to the radar screens in the City when it started to pull back from high profile, high cost expansions like Wellbeing, an unprofitable wander into complementary health, and the cosmetics-only Pure Beauty chain.
