Ogoni ethnic nationality of Rivers State has accused the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc of breach of Bankers guarantee entered into between the Ogoni people and the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) over payment of compensation following oil spillage which occurred on Ogoni land about nine years ago.

In an open letter to President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Rivers State governor, Dr. Peter Odili, the Ogoni people alleged ploy by the Union Bank to frustrate the payment of over N255 million as ordered by a High Court and upheld by Appeal Court over the oil spillage which took place in 1994.
