College graduates enter a life of ambiguity, diversity, complexity and rapid change. What can help them?

Dr. Marcia Baxter Magolda, professor of educational leadership at Miami University in Oxford OH, conducted a longitudinal study that followed 39 women and men from college entrance into their early 30s, as they moved gradually from external to internal direction, or self-authorship. Most didn't begin the transition until after college, and few had a solid internal foundation before 30.
