Reversing a trend toward more diversity in athletics, the hiring of women and minorities as athletics administrators has decreased since 2001, according to a 2003 study.
Although the 2001 Racial and Gender Report Card showed the best hiring records in 14 years of tracking, the new report shows fewer gains, according to Richard Lapchick, sports sociologist and author of the study. He heads the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.
"While we are creeping toward fair play, we still have a long road ahead," he said, calling the reversal disappointing. The study tracks hiring of coaches and ADs / front office managers in NCAA schools, major league baseball and soccer, the WNBA, NBA, NHL and NFL.
