The largest number of women ever to be elected to join the National Academy of Sciences, 17 women and at least two African Americans, were among the 72 new members chosen this year. That increases the percentage of women to about 8% of the 1,922 active members, but fewer than the 14% of women who are full professors in the natural and social sciences in U.S. universities.
