When Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles invited sisters Loretta and Linda Sanchez to address graduates at commencement, the idea was to honor two women whose hard work brought them from immigrant status to become members of Congress.
But traditionalists thought the Catholic college shouldn't have invited them because they favor abortion rights, against the teachings of the Catholic church. The conservative Cardinal Newman Society objected to their selection, saying speakers should uphold the church's positions.
Holding fast, the 84-year old college for women defended its choice of speakers, noting that its enrollment was 45% Latina students who could see the sisters as role models for empowering women.
