COAL mining may not be the most exciting business in which to invest, but unexciting investments can often provide valuable stability to portfolios.

Centennial, which operates coal mines in NSW and Queensland, has a defensive earnings stream which has the potential to grow over time, together with a reasonable (unfranked) dividend paid to investors.

Centennial is inexpensive on a fundamental basis and the share price could potentially rise to over $3 in the medium term.
