Statesman News Service BHUBANESWAR, June 2. - Hundreds of city slum-dwellers today staged a demonstration in front of the state Assembly here in protest against the government's ongoing eviction drive.
The demonstrators presented a 7-point charter of demands addressed to Governor, Mr MM Rajendran and chief minister, Mr Navin Patnaik urging them to stop the demolition of slums totally and rehabilitate slum-dwellers properly.
Their major demands included a total ban on the demolition of slums, implementation of slum policy, 2003, issuing of identity cards to slum-dwellers, provision of land and housing loans, proper rehabilitation before an eviction drive, legal action against the officials responsible for illegal eviction and so on.
The agitators lamented the fact that the slum-dwellers were being evicted when a severe heat wave had gripped the city. ...
