SEOUL, June 2 Asia Pulse - While Heelys, Snake Boards, Rollkys and Trikkes may not exhibit the same level of consumer recognition as their more conventional cousins, inline skates, they are nonetheless gaining rapid popularity in South Korea's burgeoning sports and leisure equipment market.
Department stores, discount outlets and sporting goods stores are doing a roaring trade in many items that most people would struggle to put a name to.
The common feature? Wheels.
Inline skating has become remarkably popular in Korea, especially among the younger generation, with parks, streets and even fast food restaurants playing host to free-wheeling packs of kids.
The National Council of Sports for All estimate some 1.5 million people participate in inline skating here while more than 2,000 groups have been set up to promote and enjoy the hobby.
The nation's leading discount store, E-Mart, revealed that sales of inline skates in May came in at over 12 billion won (US$10.05 million). K2, one of the major inline skates makers, expects this year's sales figure to top 10 billion won.
