CANBERRA, June 2 Asia Pulse - Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has played down the likelihood of conflict on the Korean peninsula, saying that said he did not expect pre-emptive strikes against the North.
He has also warned that any diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear standoff must cover the country's trade in illegal drugs.
US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has also arrived in South Korea for talks on the future of US forces in the region.
The US is involved in a standoff with the reclusive communist nation over its decision to restart its mothballed nuclear program and pull out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
North Korea has also hinted at reprocessing spent nuclear fuel rods to extract plutonium to make as many as six nuclear weapons.
In April, Pyongyang said the lesson it had learned from the US-led war in Iraq was that it could deter US attack only by mustering a massive military deterrent force.
But in an interview to be aired tonight on ABC's Four Corners program, Mr Downer said military strikes against North Korea were not on the table.
