TAIPEI, June 2 Asia Pulse - Taiwan Premier Yu Shyi-kun presided over the opening ceremony of the western section of the first highway tunnel which is part of a roadway that will stretch the length of the Shueishan mountain range in Ilan, eastern Taiwan.
The 5.7-kilometer western section of the tunnel begins in Touchen, Ilan County, and has taken 12 years to complete. It was branded by engineers as the most difficult tunnel project in the world because of the many fault lines it had to cross.
The fault lines caused unexpected difficulties to the engineers including cave-ins, quicksand and water which buried the tunnel-cutting machine 25 times. The huge cutting machine made specially for this project at a price of NT$1 billion ...
