CANBERRA, June 2 Asia Pulse - The federal government today said it would be irresponsible not to give Australian Protective Service (APS) officers new powers to search people at airports.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison yesterday announced plans for new laws to give the APS officers new powers to search, detain and question anyone behaving suspiciously at airports.
Senator Ellison said today the APS needed new laws to intervene on the spot and protect airports.
"Why not give them this power? It would be irresponsible not to," Senator Ellison told ABC radio.
"That is their role - to ensure that our airports are safe and secure."
