Despite discussion of a world-wide draft during last year's labor negotiations, nothing has changed. The 2003 amateur draft will proceed June 3-5 just like all the recent drafts, meaning some teams will draft purely for talent and others will draft for signability.
The first round of this year's draft isn't considered particularly great. There are talented players available, there just aren't many who stand out.
Possible top five picks
1 Tampa Bay: Rickie Weeks, 2B, Southern University. Weeks someday could be a nice double-play partner for prospect B.J. Upton. The Devil Rays need offensive help, and Weeks can do it all.
2 Milwaukee: Adam Loewen, LHP, Chipola J.C. (Florida). The Brewers have some sluggers on the way in Corey Hart, Prince Fielder and Brad Nelson, but they need more pitching to be competitive. Loewen throws in the mid-90s and has the size (6-6, 215) teams love in a power pitcher.
3 Detroit: Delmon Young, OF, Camarillo (California) H.S. A college hitter would be a better fit, but the Tigers shouldn't pass on a player with his upside at the plate. He's the brother of Tigers outfielder Dmitri Young. The Tigers' young pitchers have made some progress, both in ...
