Doctors hope to find a kidney donor for rugby phenomenon Jonah Lomu within three months, enabling him to come off the renal dialysis treatment he has just begun for his rare chronic kidney condition.
All Black doctor John Mayhew told AFP Sunday that specialists had been searching for a suitable donor within Lomu's family well before he began dialysis, but had not found anyone yet.
The 28-year-old All Black, rugby's biggest star since shooting to fame as a 19-year-old at the 1995 World Cup, started renal dialysis at Auckland Hospital Saturday after his kidney condition -- nephrotic syndrome -- deteriorated rapidly last month.
A kidney transplant is the next step if a compatible donor can be found, the Sunday Star-Times reported.
Lomu now faces three dialysis treatments a week, each lasting two hours.
Lomu told fans in a statement on his website that he still dreamt of wearing an All Black shirt again.
