Charges were filed in an Indian court against Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani and seven others for their role in the demolition of an ancient mosque in north India by thousands of Hindu zealots in 1992.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India's top investigating agency, filed a supplementary chargesheet on Saturday against Advani, Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, former sports minister Uma Bharti and others in a special court in Rae Bareilly town in Uttar Pradesh state.
Charges have already been filed against the eight, but the court ordered the CBI to file any additional counts against them by Saturday.
The eight defendants have been charged with inciting mobs to tear down the 16th century Babri mosque in Ayodhya town on December 6, 1992 that led to widespread riots in the country.
Hindus claim the mosque was built by Mughul emperor Babur, who demolished a temple on that spot that marked the birthplace of Hindu god Ram.
Just who should have possession of the site is being decided ...
