The mainland reported only one new Sars case yesterday - the lowest since the government began accurate reporting more than a month ago - but officials vowed to be vigilant in preventing a relapse.
The new case was found in Beijing, according to a Ministry of Health report. Four more Sars patients, also in Beijing, died. By yesterday morning, the mainland had a total of 5,328 Sars cases, with 3,371 being discharged from hospitals.
Yesterday was the sixth straight day of single-digit new infections. The sharp decline raised hope that the outbreak, which has claimed 332 lives on the mainland, has been brought under control.
China has been the hardest hit country in the Sars outbreak. The World Health Organisation still advises against visiting Beijing and Tianjin and the provinces of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia.
