The number of new claims for welfare payments last month may have set a record, the government warned yesterday.
Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the Director of Social Welfare, said that judging from the figures for the first three weeks of May, she expected the figures for the whole month to reach a new high. By the end of April, the number of people claiming Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) had reached 275,644, a 1.4 per cent increase on the previous month, and the highest monthly growth since June 1999.
The number of unemployed recipients in April increased 6.1 per cent.
"The unemployment rate is going up and job opportunities in the market are quite limited," said Mrs Lam. "As a result of the Sars outbreak, many employees also lost their jobs. Therefore demand for the CSSA scheme has been rising."
