I must respond to your March 10th cover story entitled "Your Job May Be Next!" The article was followed by a subsection entitled "Fighting for Our Jobs," in which the writer urged the Immigration and Naturalization Service and Border Patrol to tighten their restrictions on immigration. The writer ignores the devastating economic consequences of immigration restriction.
Competition is crucial to economic prosperity, and immigration restriction is an attempt by American workers to eliminate their competitors. Once the competitors of American workers have been eliminated, the American workers lose the incentive to be productive. Why work hard when one does not have to worry about an immigrant competing for his job? These restrictions on immigration drive up wages for American workers, which places a burden on American businessmen and employers, and in turn causes them to charge higher prices for their products.
