JUNE 1, 1903 (News Items) FOOTBALL League Competition Rangers vs Howrah THE first match between the Rangers and Howrah in the League Competition was played yesterday on the Rangers' ground. After their victory over Burn and Co., it was expected that the Rangers would have done as well against the Howrah team. There were some changes, Anderson taking his usual place as back, with Brown being a tower of strength to his side, and Whitie playing centre forward in the absence of Hill. Russell, Sr., was also in his old place in the forward line, but the attacking division was still very weak, there being little or no combination. Lees and O'Locklin rendered excellent service as half backs, and especially so in strengthening the defence, while Wheelan saved some good shots. Howrah were also weak in the forward line, the attacks not being pressed home with dash, ...
