MOHAN SAHAY STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, May 31. Foodgrain production is expected to fall for the third successive year this time. The fall is likely to be in the range of 1.5 million tons due to drought conditions in large parts of the country despite the forecast of a normal monsoon. From 211 million tons last year, production could further dip to less than 210 million tons this fiscal. Only 40 per cent of net sown area, 143 million hectares, are covered under an irrigation scheme. This figure itself is disputed with many states inflating figures showing the area under irrigation.
