90 Shinkansen support pillars unreinforced despite order

SENDAI

About 90 viaduct support pillars on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in Miyagi Prefecture have not been reinforced, even after a government order to do so following the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, sources said Friday.

The pillars, mostly located around Sendai, are among about 1,000 in the prefecture that the central government ordered reinforced. For 60 of the 90 pillars, no plans exist to begin work on them.

East Japan Railway Co. explained that the delay was due to the location of the pillars, which are close to buildings, make it difficult to access them for reinforcement.
