Typhoon deluge disrupts transport

Typhoon No.4, the first typhoon to strike Japan in May since 1965, weakened into a temperate depression in Kagawa Prefecture at about 9 a.m. Saturday after crossing onto land at Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture, and moving eastward.
It brought heavy rains to a wide area of the nation from Kyushu and Tokai to the Kanto region.
In the 24 hours since 11 a.m. Friday, the rainfall totaled 473 millimeters in Owase, Mie Prefecture and 420 millimeters in Mihama in the prefecture.
In the eastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture, rainfall of up to 150 millimeters is expected, while up to 230 millimeters is forecast for the mountainous region of the prefecture.
