MPD cracks down on debtor list sellers

Yomiuri

The Metropolitan Police Department has decided to crack down on agencies selling lists of names of people saddled with multiple consumer loans to illegal money-lenders, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Saturday.

The agencies are suspected of helping the moneylenders violate the Investment Deposit and Interest Rate Control Law.

The MPD believes some of the agencies selling the lists intended to help the moneylenders, as they admitted during police questioning to knowing that the buyers of the lists were illegal moneylenders.

This is the first time for the police to charge such businesses, which have a cozy relationship with illegal moneylenders, with criminal responsibility.
