Govt to up N. Korean ship checks
Yomiuri
The government is considering significantly increasing inspections of all North Korean ships that dock in Japan, government sources said Saturday.
In addition to the Man Gyong Bong 92 freighter-passenger that will dock at Niigata Port on June 9, about 1,400 North Korean ships visit Japanese ports annually.
In order to prevent such ships from smuggling narcotics into the country and illegally exporting components for missile development, the government considers it is necessary to strengthen its monitoring procedure on all incoming North Korean vessels, the sources said.
At a meeting of relevant ministries and agencies held Thursday, the government decided that the Construction and Transport Ministry will conduct a Port State Control (PSC) inspection of the Man Gyong Bong to check its equipment and determine its safety and seaworthiness.
