Kava kava has been removed from pharmacy shelves in Germany and Switzerland after 24 reports of liver damage were attributed to the herbal supplement, Dr. Edzard Ernst said at a health care symposium sponsored by the University of Exeter (England).
Based on these reports, the Food and Drug Administration issued a MedWatch alert in December, asking U.S. health care professionals to report any possible cases of hepatotoxicity associated with kava supplements. The FDA has received several reports of serious injury allegedly associated with the use of kava-containing dietary supplements, with at least one report of hepatic failure requiring liver transplantation in a previously healthy young woman.
