New rheumatoid arthritis drug. (Musculoskeletal Disorders).
Anakinra, the third biologic therapy to be approved for moderate to severely active rheumatoid arthritis, may have some therapeutic advantages over its competition.
Anakinra (Kineret) is the first interleukin-1 inhibitor to be approved for the indication. Like the two tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-[alpha] inhibitors, etanercept (Enbrel) and infliximab (Remicade), anakinra is not approved as a first-line therapy but is reserved for patients who have failed to respond to other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Methotrexate remains the mainstay of rheumatoid arthritis therapy, and all three biologic drugs can be used in combination with methotrexate. Etanercept and anakinra also can be used as monotherapies.
