A single dose of the anticoagulant enoxaparin (Levenox) before a long-distance flight effectively prevents deep vein thrombosis in high-risk patients, while compression stockings are a nonpharmacologic alternative for other fliers, Gianni Belcaro, Ph.D., said at the annual scientific sessions of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Belcaro of the University of Chieti (Italy) reported on three Italian studies.
LONFLIT I involved 389 subjects at high risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and 355 at low risk; all flew economy class on flights averaging slightly more than 12 hours duration. Ultrasound scans done 24 hours before and after flying showed that there were 19 thrombotic events in 389 participants (5%) at high risk for DVT and none in low-risk individuals.
