EXETER, ENGLAND -- Salvia officinalis may prove useful for the relief of hot flashes in menopausal women, according to the results of a pilot study presented at a health care symposium sponsored by the University of Exeter.
A group of 39 women were randomized to receive 8 weeks of treatment with fresh tincture of salvia (sage) extract, which is a mild phytoestrogen, or placebo in a dosage of 25 drops three times each day.
An initial analysis showed no overall significant differences between the salvia and placebo groups with respect to frequency, duration, or severity of hot flashes, said Julie Gallagher, R.N., of Bioforce Ltd., Irvine, Scotland. Frequency of hot flashes decreased from an average of 47 per day to 26 in the salvia group, and from 47 per day to 28 in the placebo group by week 8.
