The benefits of inserting an IUD immediately after an induced or spontaneous abortion may outweigh the postinsertion risks, reported Dr. Nancy L. Stanwood and her associates at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
The investigators retrospectively studied eight randomized, controlled trials, each involving between 259 and 2,340 women of any age or gravidity. Each trial had at least one treatment arm using immediate insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device after induced or spontaneous abortion (Br. J. Obstet. Gynaecol. 108[11]:1168-73, 2001).
