PITTSBURGH -- PITTSBURGH, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contains data from the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) showing that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increased the risk for dementia in postmenopausal women aged 65 years or older. In addition, HRT did not prevent mild cognitive impairment in these women.
This new research, fresh on the heels of recent findings that HRT does not improve overall quality of life in the short-term, comes as we approach the one-year mark of one of the biggest shake-ups in the history of women's health -- the findings of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) that long-term, combination HRT can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, stroke and blood clots.
