SARASOTA FLA. -- Think of acute fatty liver hen a woman with a triplet pregnancy experiences nausea and vomiting in the third trimester, Dr. Mary E. D'Alton advised.
"In a series of over 100 sets of triplets, we had four cases of biopsy-proven fatty liver disease. The presentation in all these cases was quite different than what you would expect according to the literature," she said at a symposium on high-risk pregnancy sponsored by Symposia Medicus.
Aside from the nausea and vomiting, increasing abnormalities in liver function tests were the only presenting signs in these four patients, said Dr. D'Alton, Virgil Damon professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University, New York.
