SARASOTA, FLA. -- A finding of echogenic bowel on second-trimester ultrasound typically is a transient artifact, but in some instances signals the possibility that the fetus is affected by cystic fibrosis, Dr. Felice Baron said at a symposium on high-risk pregnancy sponsored by Symposia Medicus.
This ultrasound finding, in which the bowel exhibits similar or greater echogenicity than the surrounding fetal bone, is seen in 0.2%-2% of fetuses. While in most cases the baby will be normal, there is a 3.6% risk of cystic fibrosis (CF) and the parents should be offered carrier testing, said Dr. Baron, associate director of maternal-fetal medicine at the Perinatal Center of Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital.
Current carrier testing can detect up to 90% of the mutations associated with CF.
Whites have a high prevalence--1 in 25--of the CF mutations. ...
