MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Outcomes for women having midtrimester rescue cerclage are significantly worse than those for women who have cerclage electively, Dr. Michele Urban reported.
Significant predictors of failed cerclage--defined as delivering before 35 weeks' gestation--include cervical effacement, exposed membranes, uterine activity, and black race, she said at the annual meeting of District IV of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Urban of the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, and her associates conducted a retrospective analysis of 142 singleton gestations in which cerclage was used.
