EVEN AS its opposers ended their hunger strike last week against its propagation, the country's first genetically engineered corn planted in over 120 hectares of farmlands in Ilocos, Isabela, Pangasinan, Camarines Sur and Misamis Oriental was being harvested.

Biotechnology research firm Monsanto Philippines Inc. is reaping for the first time its initial Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn seeds, according to Emmanuel S. Borlongan, Monsanto's director for government and public affairs, in an interview Friday.
