MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Microculdoscopy with hydroflotation is a new and effective tool for diagnosing an ectopic pregnancy and is well tolerated by patients, Dr. Kimberly Kleiss reported at the annual meeting of District IV of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Microculdoscopy can be most useful to confirm ectopic pregnancy in patients with [beta]-HCG levels below 1,500 mIU/mL; above that level, intrauterine pregnancies are reliably predictable with ultrasound, said Dr. Kleiss of Emory University; Atlanta.
Microculdoscopy--often used in diagnosing the cause of pelvic pain or infertility-is less invasive than traditional surgery, requires only local anesthesia, and causes no manipulation of organs, Dr. Kleiss said.
In a randomized, controlled study, she and her colleagues evaluated eight women with a possible ectopic pregnancy using microculdoscopy, while six more women with a possible ectopic pregnancy served as the control group and were managed with surgery, methotrexate, or serial [beta] HCG assessment.
